Honoring October 7th: A Healing Yoga Class for Our Community of Women
Aja CohenShare
This morning, we came together as a community of Jewish women to honor and remember the souls lost on and since October 7th, especially those from the Nova Music Festival in Israel. We gathered in the peaceful surroundings of nature for a yoga class that served as both a healing and reflective practice. It was a powerful moment of unity, strength, and remembrance.
Carol Berlin began our class with a somatic meditation, a technique that invites participants to focus on bodily sensations as a way to process emotions and trauma. Somatic meditation helps ground the body, allowing it to release stress and tension that might be stored deep within. As we sat together, Carol guided us through the meditation, helping us connect to ourselves, each other, and the earth beneath us. It was a calming and centering way to start our practice, and Carol’s presence was a gift to all of us.
For this meditation, Carol wore our Cheetah Midi Skirt, a modest and comfortable option that’s perfect for deep, mindful practices. The flow of the skirt added to the gentle energy in the air.
Following the meditation, I led a Vinyasa flow, incorporating poses that symbolized the strength and resilience of our community. One of the central poses in our practice was Tree Pose, a grounding posture that invites balance and connection to the earth. I chose Tree Pose to represent Rosh Hashanah, symbolizing growth, renewal, and standing strong through adversity, much like the meaning of the Jewish New Year.
We also moved into Dancer Pose, a beautiful, expressive pose that represents grace, strength, and balance. This pose held special meaning for us as it honored the souls lost at the Nova Music Festival. The openness and vulnerability of the pose reminded us of the lives cut short in such a senseless way, yet also evoked the beauty and joy they shared.
For the class, I wore our Forest Green Knot Dress—a modest, flexible piece perfect for moving through yoga postures while maintaining comfort and elegance. The color choice of forest green was intentional, representing nature, renewal, and grounding energy.
Our yoga practice was not just about movement—it was about coming together, finding peace, and creating space to heal. Being in community with other Jewish women, remembering those we've lost, and using yoga as a tool for healing was a powerful experience. As we flowed through each posture, we honored our heritage, our connection to Israel, and the souls who were tragically taken from us on October 7th.
In these difficult times, we continue to stand strong, not just as individuals, but as a united community of women. This class reminded us that even in our grief, there is space for healing, movement, and hope.
